Sandy Sez !

The big news out of the Winter Meetings in Orlando today is while you and I fight through the snow, ice and rain; those covering the meetings are toughing it out in 84 degree weather in Disney World.

Mets fans are waiting for Sandy Alderson to trade for a starting shortstop, top starting pitcher and oh yeah, back of the bullpen relievers because all three are growing on the palms trees outside the Happiest Place On Earth.

So without a blockbuster trade on the horizon, Mets fans are left trying to translate the latest in Sandy Speak over whether Ruben Tejada will or won’t be the opening day starting shortstop.  Would the Mets like to have a bonified solid shortstop ready for March 31st at Citi Field ? Of course. Can they find one at a reasonable price? They are going to try. What if they can’t? Then Tejeda is your guy, a guy with a whole lot to prove.

If the Mets don’t land a shortstop, then it will be Tejada chance to prove the organization and guys like me wrong that he’s not some lazy unmotivated slug who is wasting his talents with a piss poor attitude.  It’s one thing for me not to a fan of his but when your GM and manager, a manger by the way who goes out of his way to protect players to a fault, calls out your poor work ethic, it’s a make or break proposition. It’s December 9th Ruben, make sure you have that work visa ready.

Hard to criticize the signing of Curtis Granderson. Would a 3 yr deal have been better? Of course it would but when you’re not working strength, it’s tough to be a hard line negotiator.  Granderson will be a solid player for the Mets, he’ll play a good LF and he’ll drive in some runs and get on base. On the down side, he’ll strike out a lot and he won’t hit for a high average. Give Mets credit the outfield as situated right now of Granderson, Lagares and Young is much better than what was on the field last year and if anything it’s as solid a defensive outfield as there is in baseball.

It seems like a foregone conclusion that Ike Davis will be an ex-Mets sooner than later. Daniel Murphy could join him as trade bait as well. I don’t know what you can get for either one but I won’t be upset if they’re gone. I’m not hating on either guy but I just think the time is right to move them.

Ike is the perfect player who needs a change of address to revive his career. Alderson does not want to go through another April/May of Ike hitting .170 and swinging and missing at pitches down and in.

When it comes to Murphy , I believe the Mets feel that they’ve seen the best of what his skill sets which are far from irreplaceable will be.

By the way Ed Marcus of Metsmerized Online and me will be back with another Shouts from Shea Podcast on Wednesday at 8PM with a full recap of the news and rumors from the Winter Meetings. We will be joined by Joe DeCaro of Metsmerized Online as well.
